Junior Development

Nothing more Australian than teaching kids to MTB

The Townsville Rockwheelers’ Mountain Bike Club held a junior riders skills clinic on Australia Day. The clinic was run at the Rockwheelers’ trails in Douglas and 19 riders from 6 to 16 years attended.

Boys and girls who attended the clinic were taught the fundamentals for a safe and enjoyable ride of the local trails.

After bikes were checked for correct setup Rockwheelers’ coaches taught the mountain bike fundamentals of body position, braking and momentum. With this skills-set, riders progressed to cornering, log rollovers, ramps, steps and drop-offs.

After the success of the first skills clinic, future clinics are now in the pipeline. Social rides are also being held for riders to prepare for Rockwheelers’ major annual events the Hotrock and the Paluma Push

The Paluma Push is an iconic annual event that caters to the whole family. This year the Push is being held on the 22nd July.

The Hotrock is held on the 8th and 9th of September at Ross Dam. A junior race is held on the Saturday and a team’s event, well suited to a family, is held on the Sunday.

Rockwheelers are also supporting talented local riders with Junior Development Awards providing funds for travel to national mountain bike events. Peter Knott 16 and Nelson Tilley 18 received their awards following recent performances at local, state and national titles.

Both riders achieved outstanding results at the Queensland titles late last year. Peter finished 1st in the Under 17 Downhill competition and Nelson finished 4th in the Elite Men’s Cross Country.
