Since April 2019, the Townsville Rockwheelers Mountain Bike Club has been conducting a trail monitoring program at the 116ha Douglas MTB Reserve. The purpose of the program is to create robust baseline data for the usage of Townsville’s premier mountain biking location. This program is a Club initiative aimed at creating a better understanding of how our $1.5m asset is utilised by the Townsville Community. The data collected both, MTBs and pedestrians are combined with peer-reviewed research and compared to trail usage data from two iconic Australian destinations, Derby and the Sunshine Coast, creating a compelling discussion for future mountain biking management opportunities in Townsville.

Special thanks Travis Bailey, the Club’s Land Access Coordinator for all his efforts in getting this program up and running and compiling this report.
