Douglas Trail Closures
| CLOSED | None |
Riding wet trails doesn’t just cause them to appear unsightly and mucky. Deep tyre marks in the track surface make it more difficult for rain water to shed off and away from the track and unnecessarily add to the maintenance burden for our trail volunteers. To help make trail users aware of this point we’re launching a new process to manage track closures and we need your help!
Rockwheelers' Track Closure signs look like this:

Over coming days we’ll deploy the signs on some of our trails. Cones will live on the hill for duration of wet season.
Track is open when the cone is off to the side of the track.
Track is closed when cone is clearly in the middle of the track.
Track is closed when cone is clearly in the middle of the track.
How wet is too wet:
Track Too wet = your tyres leave an indent all along the track.
Track Ok = your tyres only leave an indent in the odd muddy patch along the track. Just go easy and try not to slop up those sections.

When will a track be closed: when the TBC receives a report that a track is too wet. Preferred method to communicate is via the Forum (Douglas Track Conditions Report) but email/phone is fine.
Process to close: any Rockwheelers member that is next up the hill after reading a "too wet" report on the forum, please can you move the cones from side to middle of track. This can be any rider, not just someone in the TBC.
Process to open: a member of the TBC will inspect the track after a closure after it’s had time to dry, say, a day or so of full sunlight. Once dry the TBC person will move the sign themselves or, to save having to back track, post a favourable track report on the forum, asking for next rider to move the signs.
Promptness: This is clearly not a GPS equipped, satellite linked, CCTV monitored, remote operation system. It's simply riders communicating and moving signs. The TBC volunteers will try their best to move the signs but please be patient and prepare for a large margin for error and delay. If a track sits perfectly dry but a cone is still on track a day or more because one of the TBC hasn't had chance to inspect, just ride another track or another location. The wet season will be over in a couple of months.
Assistants: this is clearly a people-powered approach to managing track closures. WE NEED YOUR HELP. Mocha Mecca vouchers (2 for 1 breakfast items) will be given to people who:
- post track condition reports on the forum; and
- assist the TBC with this process.

This process is chiefly about raising awareness. We’re not trail Nazis and we're not setting out to stop people who are super desperate for a ride. Hopefully though those desperados will be first to pick up a tool at the next track working bee to clean up.
Feedback: please send your suggestions and comments on the process to greg@rockwheelers.com.au
Thanks in advance for your cooperation,
